Dog Is In Tears After Family Leaves Him at High-Kill Shelter, Then a Hero Comes To Dry Them

Some of us prefer to live our lives in the dark, pretending sad things like this aren’t really happening but the truth is, THEY ARE! That is why a story like this one is an ultimate victory for dogs and dog lovers everywhere.

A Pit Bull, named Blue King (Blue for short), was surrendered to a high-kill shelter in California when his family decided to move and not take him with them. Maybe it was for the best since the family kept him outside and he didn’t seem to get much attention. But still, Blue was attached to them. Like many dogs, Blue overlooked many things and still had an abundance of love in his heart for his family.

The longer Blue sat at the Carson Shelter, the more likely he would be euthanized. His fate hung in the balance. One day, shelter volunteers heard Blue crying and came to give him some attention. He wouldn’t even take a treat from them; he instead continued to cry and had actual tears streaming down his face. They brilliantly shot a video of this to post to social media, hoping it would touch someone’s heart and that hero would come and save him.

And it worked! Jennifer McKay saw Blue’s video and knew she had to meet Blue in person. She headed to the shelter immediately. “He looked very sad and depressed,” McKay told The Dodo. “He wouldn’t even acknowledge me at all. All the other dogs were making eye contact and wagging their tails, but he wouldn’t stand up, wouldn’t come see me. It was sad.”

McKay thought it was likely that Blue was waiting for the family who had left him there. Every time someone walked by, he would look, hopeful, then realize it wasn’t them and lay his sad head down. It was truly heartbreaking. McKay decided she would be his new family. That she would do whatever it took to leave his sadness in his past.

But first, Blue had to pass a temperament test. The process was torturous. McKay just wanted to bring Blue home! While she waited for the process that would take a while, she brought him a new doggy bed and a toy to keep him company. Blue didn’t really acknowledge McKay, still so sad and withdrawn, but he did love his new bed.

By McKay’s third visit, Blue finally perked up. He actually went over to McKay, showing her he was well aware of what she was doing… trying to get Blue out of that miserable place.

The whole process took a full torturous week. Blue passed his tests and McKay was able to bring him home. The moment he was let out of his kennel, a totally new dog emerged. “He kind of tricked me,” McKay said, laughing. “I was expecting to get a really laid back, chill dog, but as soon as the gates opened in the kennel, he was super excited. And he loved riding in the car. He wanted to stick his head out the window.”

As soon as Blue got to his new home, McKay gave him a much-needed bath. He then made himself at home on the couch and fell asleep. A big comfy couch that was a far cry from the cold kennel floor.

The saddest dog, that cried in his kennel at the high-kill shelter, is now learning how to be a happy, carefree pet. No more worries, no more sad days. Since being in his new, forever home with McKay, Blue hasn’t cried once!
