Couple Adopts The Last Dog Left At The Shelter, A Disabled German Shepherd

In the animal world Black Friday means much more than crazy crowds and super savings. Many shelters waive their adoption fees over the Thanksgiving weekend to help the pets in their care find homes for the holidays.

The Arizona Humane Society in Phoenix placed a mind-blowing 313 pets in new homes this year. In fact, every one was adopted except Bryan, a 5-year-old partially blind German Shepherd.

The shelter staff knew that Bryan would have difficulty finding a home as pets with disabilities often do. The adoption event – sponsored by Zappos.com and Best Friends Animal Society – was a rousing success, but it was heartbreaking to see sweet Bryan, all alone among a sea of empty cages.

Bryan, a blind 5-year-old German Shepherd, was very malnourished when he was found by AHS' EAMTs after being abandoned in a backyard. Meet Bryan: http://www.petharbor.com/pet.asp?uaid=AZHS.A541771

Then a holiday miracle occurred. Patti Mooers and her husband arrived at the shelter just in time to rescue Bryan in the month of November! Turns out that the Mooers are not only German Shepherd fans, they also have experience caring for disabled dogs. Their last German Shepherd used a wheelchair when he lost the use of his rear legs.

Bryan has only been in his new home for a few days now, but the Mooers say that he is settling in just fine. Patti told Phoenix’s KPHO News:

“He’s smelling everything. He bumps into a few things but he seems real content,”

She also urged other potential adopters to consider taking in a disabled pet.

“Just go meet them and see if it’s a good fit. They have so much love to give and they deserve a good home,”
