Reason for Recall: Salmonella Contamination

According the Dog Advisor.com, Salmonella is a bacterial organism that can cause life threatening infections in people, specifically younger children, elderly individuals and those with a weakened immune system.

There is risk to humans while handling products contaminated with Salmonella, especially if individuals have not thoroughly washed their hands after contact.

Healthy individuals who have been exposed to the bacteria, can experience fever, nausea, vomitting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the bacteria can enter the blood stream and cause a catastrophic immune response.

The FDA reports that it is uncommon for healthy dogs to become sick from Salmonella themselves. However, puppies, older dogs and dogs with weakened immune systems can experience a severe immune response.

Symptoms include: lethargy, diarrhea or even bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some dogs will only experience a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.
