Dog Falls Off Boat And Gets Lost At Sea – Fights To Survive On Her Own For 5 Weeks

When fisherman Nick Hayworth’s 1-year old German Shepherd, Luna, fell off his fishing boat into the Pacific Ocean, he had every hope that she would survive and return. Luna was a powerful swimmer and he was very sure she could reach the shore. So he stayed in the area for two more days to look for her.

However, he and the Coronado Naval Base staff searched the area thoroughly, and they couldn’t find Luna. A week had passed, and they considered her lost at sea and presumed dead.

So imagine their surprise when Navy staffers saw Luna waiting for them, wagging her tail on San Clemente Island, 80 miles off the coast of San Diego. Luna had swum more than 2 miles to land and then survived through a series of El Nino storms in the open.

The storms actually helped her survive. Luna survived on the island which had no fresh water source by drinking from puddles of rainwater left behind by the storms and eating the dead seagulls and fish washed up on the shore by the storms.
