Officers Cheer On K9 As He Takes First Steps Since Surviving 2 Gunshot Wounds

K9 Officer Arlo, a three-year-old German Shepherd who has worked for the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office K9 Unit since 2019, is now recovering after he was shot twice during a police chase.

K9 Arlo was rushed to a nearby animal hospital, where they treated one bullet wound in his leg. He was then brought Oregon State University’s Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine, where the other bullet wound was treated.

The second bullet struck him right by his spine, so vets say it’s a miracle that Arlo even survived. The bullet shattered his C6 vertebra, but miraculously missed an artery by millimeters that would’ve killed him.

Arlo underwent and eight-hour surgery, where they fused his C6 and C7 vertebrae and fixed his soft tissue damage.

Vets said Arlo had a 60 percent chance of surviving the surgery, and was surprisingly already walking with help by the next morning.

Two days later, Arlo was released from the hospital. As he limped out the front doors, he was met by two lines of officers who cheered him on. The heartwarming video was posted on Facebook, which quickly went viral and touched the hearts of millions all over the world.

When Arlo arrived home to his handler, Deputy Tyler Turpin’s house, officers stood by to greet him with a “Welcome Home Arlo” sign in the yard.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Arlo will not be returning to work. He will, however, remain with Deputy Turpin and get to live out the rest of his life as a pet.
