Kevin Smith Shares Moving Tribute To His Dying, 17-Year-Old Dog

This is very much worth sharing again and again. If you only do one thing today, take Kevin’s advice.

What Kevin Smith wrote here touched me to my core and brought tears to my eyes. Any dog lover will tell you a dog’s life is too short and that the pain of losing a beloved pet is almost unbearable. When the day comes to say goodbye it often helps to share the experience with others who have gone through the same pain.

Movie director Kevin Smith shared his thoughts and farewell to his beloved dog, Mulder. He posted a photo to Facebook of him cradling Mulder with the news that Mulder was dying.

He wrote:

GOOD DOG
“Dark day in our household: our oldest dog Mulder is dying. As I’ve spent the last year carrying him around like Hodor, I’m not taking this terribly well. They never tell you when you get a dog, but there is a price to pay for being the recipient of 17 years of unconditional love, loyalty and companionship: they take a huge chunk of your heart with them when they go. I’m reminded of a line from DOCTOR WHO, Series 2 – the “School Reunion” episode (which featured the return of Sara Jane Smith and the robot dog K-9, ironically enough): “You can spend the rest of your life with me… but I can’t spend the rest of my life with you.” And later, when Rose asks Sara Jane if she should go with the Doctor, Sara Jane responds “Some things are worth getting your heart broken for.” Mulder was beyond worth it. Fuck, this hurts…”

A few hours later, Mulder passed away…

Kevin updated everyone and wrote:

1pm UPDATE: He’s gone. RIP Mulder, my Buddy-Man. Thank you for 17 years of sheer joy and affection. It took a dog like you to make me a better person.

If you’re a dog-owner, go hug your dog a little tighter tonight. If you’re not a dog-owner, think about becoming one. It’s all love.”

Good night sweet Mulder. Rest in Peace

Make sure you share this with your friends who love dogs and remind them to take Kevin’s advice and hug your pet close to your heart as much as you can while they are with you.

  1. I understand how you feel. My Ernie was 9 years old when he was diagnosed with bone cancer. My golden was my hart and sole. He lost his battle with cancer 12/26/2017. I feel so lost without him.

  2. I remember my dog Daisy had a seisure for the first time last year. I kneeled over her balling my eyes out just kept repeating “I’m sorry Daisy I’m so sorry!” I thought she was going to die in front of me. I’m more educated about her seisures now but that’s a glimpse of what I will have to go through one day. I’m not looking forward to it

  3. So sorry Ainslie. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Dog’s lives are way too short. Some tortoises live to be 100 or more yet our dogs, our beloved companions are lucky to live to be 15 years old… Even cats live longer than most dogs do..

  4. It is a sad time when you loose your best friend, they are a piece of your heart and will always remain their, i have went threw this a few times and i have two dogs now .RIP fur baby and to the care giver he had the best life because you cared.

  5. I too lost my 10 year old golden Georgie took him to Vet for what I thought was a simple UTI a few hours later I had to let him go, he had a huge tumor pushing all his organs up and his spleen was hemorrhaging, this was the worse day ever, 1/2/18. Still having a ruff time, miss him and our daily walks, not to mention his company and love!

  6. Losing a treasured furry friend and beloved companion is always so very hard and just tears your heart out each time. Take some comfort in knowing that you gave them a warm and loving home with plenty of food, attention and gentle care for as long as they shared your life and hold those warm memories close forever until you meet again at Rainbow Bridge!

  7. I know how you feel, we have 3 boxers who already went to heaven. They have shorter lives, they went to sleep when they were 10 years old. I miss them dearly and they still make me cry thinking about them. The last one Jagger went 2 years ago. I love them very much. God bless you Sir for loving your baby very much.

  8. I just lost a dog and it was hard on me, but the time I spent with him was worth it. Who would’ve thought that a tiny dog could leave such huge pawprints on your heart? RIP Stubbs. I will miss you all my days little boy.

  9. Nancy Kuehn thanks Nancy. Just miss him used to complain about his fur on everything and his paw prints on my freshly vacuumed carpet now would give anything to vacuum a couple of times a day, and our walks to say hi to all our friends, he used to run up and down each driveway when my neighbor was out snow blowing our drives he loved the cold and snow! He was a pain some time but I really do miss him!

  10. We almost lost our 17 year old a month ago thank God we had the funds for the surgery and she’s doing very well it hurt me just to see her in pain I have three Chihuahuas and I love them so much I know they got to leave me one day but for right now thank God they still with me

  11. I’ve been here. My dog Libby who I had for 15 wonderful years from the time she was just weaned to the day she passed in my arms. I’m so sorry for your loss. They are our fur babies. I mourned for over 3 years and still feel the loss today. Just know he is waiting for you and will be there at the end to start your next journey together

  12. i agree completely, my babygirl is going on 8, she is my heart, i have never loved anything or anyone like this, it isnt a crazy weird romantic love, but a deep, searing, heart kicking love that has all the the joys and none of the sorrows of loving a person. you will never regret loving a dog, they wont leave you , they dont break up, they dont cheat, they dont stop loving you, they dont get too too jealous if you love other dogs as well. thats why it hurts so much, because you dont have to ask them if they love you, and they dont have to ask you either. they only want to love you, and kiss you and see you . my girl stares at me all the time, when she isnt sleeping that is, she talks, begs, wags that tail, grins at me…she has me wrapped. my boy Roscoe is just as bad, but i love them all. even our problem child Zoa…but after all these years, i finally understand what unconditional love is…..and every day i understand why people dont like people, but love dogs. i will choose a dog over hanging out with peple anyday.
