To help Luke manage his condition, his parents brought home Jedi, a Black Labrador, specially trained to sniff the changes in blood sugar levels. He comes from the service dog program called the Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD).

Like a true Jedi master, the dog stands by as the ultimate protector of his boy Luke. One night, when everyone was fast asleep, Luke’s sugar level started to fall at an alarming rate in his sleep. Jedi sensed the drop, and he knew he had to act fast.

Like a loyal hero, he ran up to mom, Dorrie Nuttall, barked and raced on top of her, until she was awake. Dorrie was able to get help just in time, as Luke’s sugar level had touched 56mg/dl, way lower than the 70mg/dl needed.

Today, Luke’s quality of life has improved thanks to Jedi. Jedi bows his head when the sugar level hits low, and waves his paws when it is elevated. Their beautiful bond of love and trust is one of the sweetest things in this world!
