Dog Looks Like Lifeless Ball Of Fur Until She Lifts Her Head For Rescuers

When authorities found Zara, a Schnauzer mix, almost a year ago she was barely recognizable. She was left in a crate in a vestibule of an apartment building to fend for herself. Neglected and then abandoned, Zara’s fur was so overgrown and matted that it was nearly impossible to tell what condition she was in. When North Shore Animal League America arrived to look at her, they saw her gingerly lift her head. That’s how they knew she was alive!

The 14-pound dog had to have 9 pounds of disgusting, matted fur cut away.  She also had a badly injured and infected front paw and was suffering from muscle atrophy from being confined to a crate and unable to move.

After she was cleaned up, it was clear there was a soulful, beautiful dog underneath all the neglect. Her former owner was sentenced to six months in jail and banned from owning animals for five years.

Over the next few months, Zara’s seizures went away and her bad paw healed. More importantly, she began to learn to trust people under the loving care of her foster family.

Zara was officially adopted in March of 2015 and has come a long way from the sad day she was found abandoned and matted. Just seeing the smile on her face in the arms of her new mom warmed my heart!
