Family Dog Believed To Have Died From “Dry Drowning,” Vets Warn Pet Parents

Victoria Lupold and her family spent a fun day at Higgens Point at Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Their healthy dog, Rocko, splashed in and out of the water throughout the afternoon. However, things took a turn for the worst when they began their trek home.

“We let him play in the water and one thing he always does when he plays in the water is he bites at the waves and of course we throw the ball for him and he goes out there,” Lupold told KHQ News.

Rocko crawled into Victoria’s lap in the car on the way home. He began vomiting water, lost consciousness, and they rushed him to the vet.

After only an hour and a half, Rocko was gone. The devastated family worried that toxic algae contributed to the dog’s death.

However, the Panhandle Health District performed extensive testing on the lake and found no evidence of algae blooms.

Visitors to KHQ’s Facebook page encourage the family to talk to their vet about dry drowning, or water intoxication. When a dog consumes too much water, it dilutes the body of fluids and puts the animal at risk for collapse, loss of consciousness, seizures, coma, and even death.

Use caution if your dog likes to drink from the hose, spends time in the water, or plays in a sprinkler, pay close attention so they are not consuming too much water. Stay safe and learn more in the video below.
