Due to the abuse inflicted upon him at the hands of his owners, a dog’s head was swollen to several times its normal size.

Sadly, because his collar was so deeply embedded into his neck tissue, the pup suffered a massive infection.

The folks at British Columbia SPCA called the situation “one of the most profoundly shocking and disturbing cases of abuse” they ever witnessed.

Bolt cutters were used to free the dog from the collar, which then revealed an exposed trachea and jugular vein.

The dog was treated, given around the clock care, and extensive surgery was performed. Despite all attempts to save his life, he passed away two days later.

Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA, shared, “This kind of appalling neglect and cruelty is sickening and absolutely unacceptable in our society,” said Moriarty.

Anderson Joe and Melissa Tooshley of Duncan were charged with animal cruelty and if convicted could receive five years in prison and a $10,000 fine in addition to a lifetime ban on ever owning animals.

Sentencing was recently handed down, and 62-year-old Anderson Joe received a three-month conditional sentence and a lifetime pet ban.

Tooshey received a one-year suspended sentence along with a lifetime ban on owning pets. Unfortunately, neither abuser will serve jail time.
