Another holiday in the books, which means another holiday that dogs and cats spent in shelters without a family.
One animal shelter in North Carolina made sure their animals received a bit of holiday cheer and happiness on Thanksgiving.
The New Hanover Sheriff’s Office Animal Services Unit served their dogs and cats a delicious holiday dinner topped with turkey, mashed potatoes, yams, and green beans.

They posted photos on their Facebook page which shows the animals enjoying their home-cooked meals.
“Shelter animals deserve a turkey dinner too and they loved theirs today!” they wrote.
They also reminded pet owners to be careful what they feed their pets this holiday season, and to always make sure anything you feed them is safe for them.

While a little bit of turkey is okay, added flavors such as onion, garlic and spices are not good for dogs. The turkey bones can be dangerous as well and lead to choking.
One of our favorite holiday side dishes is stuffing, but it can contain ingredients that could be toxic to dogs and cats such as garlic and onions.

One common ingredient in stuffing that could be dangers for pets is sage. Sage contains essential oils and resins that can cause gastrointestinal upset and central nervous system depression in pets, according to Dr. Hyunmin Kim, the veterinary staff manager at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty and Animals.

A little yams and sweet potatoes can be ok, but if your recipe contains raisins, then it’s a big no-no for your dogs. Grapes and raisins can be very harmful and have been linked to kidney failure in dogs.
