Soccer Star Cristiano Ronaldo Steps In To Rescue 80 Dogs And Save Kennel From Closure

Soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo has come to the aid of Cantinho da Lili, a Portuguese nonprofit animal rescue and rehabilitation shelter facing closure as a result of the cost of treating and caring for the 80 dogs that it currently houses.

Ronaldo, who plays forward for Real Madrid and the Portuguese national team, donated a signed Real Madrid game jersey to the shelter to be auctioned to help defray some of the costs of operation.

“I want to thank Ronaldo from the bottom of my heart. It's a simple gesture, but very important,” said shelter owner Liliana Santos in an interview with Cofina Media.

The auction, which started on Wednesday, will end on April 22. As of 12:30 p.m. Eastern Time on the first day, the jersey had already reached €1,000, or about $1,070. If you'd like to make a bid, you may do so on the Facebook page set up for the auction.

Ronaldo is known for his charitable works. According to The Independent, he has paid children's hospital bills, helped fund a cancer research center, and donated more than $6 million to Save the Children to help aid Nepal after the devastating 2015 earthquake. He was also recently named the world's highest paid athlete in 2016 by Forbes.
