20-Year-Old Dog Surrendered to Shelter Finds the Perfect Retirement Home

When Big Dog Ranch Rescue (BDRR) in Florida learned about a 20-year-old Weimaraner named Dax who had just been surrendered by his family, they knew they had to help. The rescue cares for all kinds of dogs, but Weimaraners hold a special place in their hearts — the organization was founded by a lifelong Weimaraner lover.

“This was a really unique case,” said Natalie Rubino, BDRR’s digital marketing director. “Because of his age and size, we knew he needed a special environment.”

A local shelter had reached out to BDRR, knowing Dax wouldn’t do well in a traditional kennel. BDRR’s cage-free setup was the perfect fit. They met halfway to bring him back, and soon Dax was settling into his new surroundings — including a cozy bed in the office of BDRR’s founder, Lauree Simmons.

Dax quickly surprised his new caregivers. Instead of lying quietly as they expected, he happily picked up a bone — his new favorite toy — and even tried sharing it with the other dogs. Despite limited mobility from arthritis, he formed instant friendships and became a beloved “little superhero” around the office.

When BDRR posted Dax’s story online, the response was overwhelming — hundreds of adoption requests poured in. The team took their time, determined to find the perfect home where Dax could enjoy a peaceful and loving “retirement.”

They found exactly that: a devoted mom, two dog siblings, and a home filled with comfort.

The introduction went flawlessly — the three dogs clicked instantly. Now, Dax spends his days swimming with his mom, resting on his favorite couch, and keeping up with his siblings as much as his body allows.

To make sure he stays comfortable, BDRR promised to cover all of Dax’s medical expenses for life, including a wheelchair and orthopedic bed.

For BDRR, Dax’s rescue is just one example of the work they do for the 5,000 dogs they save each year — from natural disaster zones to war-torn areas to owner surrenders.

“Dax is a very special case, but he’s also a perfect example of why we do what we do,” said Robin Friedman, BDRR’s chief development officer.

No one knows exactly how much time Dax has left, but one thing is certain — the rest of his life will be filled with joy, comfort, and love.

“This was a very special match for all of us,” Rubino said. “We all love him so much.”
