All Raju the elephant knew in his 50 years of life was pain and suffering caused by humans. But another group of humans would soon change all of that.

The charity’s U.K. spokeswoman Pooja Binepal said they were shocked to see the elephant crying. “It was so incredibly emotional for all of us. We knew in our hearts he realised he was being freed.”

They were worried that Raju’s owner might flee the scene. He even tried to prevent the rescue by yelling commands to try and scare Raju.

But Wildlife SOS didn’t give up. “We stood our ground and refused to back down — and as we did so, tears began to roll down Raju’s face.”

Raju stepped out of the truck one minute past midnight on July 4th to freedom.
