Shelter Cat Reaches Out to Hold Hands — And It Changes His Life

From the moment Tigger was rescued, he made it clear he wasn’t just any ordinary cat. First at Associated Humane Societies (AHS) Newark, and later at Loving Hands Cat Rescue, Tigger quickly became a favorite among volunteers — and not just for his sweet personality.

“[He was] sweet, playful, cuddly and funny,” said Tamara Ramos-Sadel, technology and fundraising coordinator at Loving Hands Cat Rescue. “Tigger would always look for attention from AHS Newark volunteers as well as volunteers at Loving Hands Cat Rescue.”

And Tigger had a signature move to make sure no one missed him: he would reach his paws through the bars of his kennel, gently trying to hold hands with anyone who passed by. It was his way of saying, “Please stop and love me.”

The adorable gesture was impossible to ignore. So much so that AHS Newark shared a video of it on TikTok — and that post changed everything.

Not long after the video went up, Tigger’s wish finally came true.

“He was quickly adopted after he arrived at our shelter,” Ramos-Sadel said. “He was adopted with Cali, his AHS Newark shelter cage neighbor. Both were at our shelter for a month or so.”

Now Tigger and his best friend Cali are living their dream life together. The pair spend their days lounging in sunny spots, watching squirrels and chipmunks through the windows, and soaking up endless love and affection from their new family.

Thanks to a simple, heartfelt gesture, Tigger not only found a home — he found a forever friend and all the love he was searching for.
