Bre Burger and her wife, Amanda, have a soft spot for dogs with special needs. Over the past eight years, the couple has opened their hearts and home to several pups with disabilities — each one a beloved family member.
But one day, while scrolling through social media, a particularly unique dog stopped them in their tracks. It wasn’t just his tiny frame that caught their eye — it was his unforgettable smile.

The pup, named Marv, had a striking set of teeth resembling a vampire’s grin. He was being fostered by a friend of theirs and was still searching for a forever home. Instantly, Burger felt a connection.
“I couldn’t stop worrying about who he might end up with,” Burger told The Dodo. “It felt like he was already ours. Making him part of our family was the only way to be sure he’d get the life he deserved.”

In June 2023, Marv officially joined the Burger household. From the start, his new moms were ready to embrace every challenge that came with his care — and to learn all about his quirky, lovable personality.
Marv has a genetic condition that hasn’t yet been fully diagnosed, partly due to his need for medical clearance before undergoing anesthesia. But his distinct features — including an overcrowded mouth, a short lower jaw, and a tiny tongue — are likely the result of a condition known as parrot mouth.

“He has a second row of bottom teeth and two long top ones that always catch people’s attention,” Burger explained.
Because Marv’s tongue is too short to reach a bowl, his parents use a plastic syringe to give him water. And when it’s time for meals — his favorite part of the day — they’ve got a whole system down.
“I prop him up with towels, put a bib on him, and spoon-feed him,” Burger said. “He absolutely loves it.”
After each meal, Marv gets his teeth brushed to prevent food from getting stuck in his crowded mouth — and he handles it all like a champ.
Though his smile may be vampire-like, Marv’s personality is nothing but sweet. He’s known for gently nibbling on his favorite humans — his own special way of showing affection.
“Marv communicates in such a unique way,” Burger said. “His little love bites are the gentlest thing.”

When he’s not lovingly nibbling or enjoying his gourmet meals, Marv loves being cradled like a baby or lounging on the couch, watching TV with his family. His front legs naturally cross when he relaxes, giving him an extra distinguished look.

To share his joy with the world, the Burger family began posting Marv’s daily adventures on Instagram. They hope that his sweet spirit and unique appearance can inspire more people to see the beauty in special needs pets.
“It means so much to know he makes people smile,” Burger said. “He may look different and need extra help, but he brings so much joy. That’s his purpose — to remind people that every life has value, no matter what it looks like.”
To keep up with Marv’s adventures, follow him on Instagram and/or TikTok.
