What began as an ordinary walk through Vancouver’s Pacific Spirit Park turned into a moment that would change a dog’s life forever.
While out with his friend Krista Brisk, Terry Sparrow stopped to throw away his gum. But as he lifted the trash can lid, something inside moved. Assuming it was a squirrel or raccoon, he looked closer — and was stunned.
Buried beneath the garbage was a fluffy brown dog, barely able to move.

“It was heartbreaking,” Sparrow told North Shore News. “I’m still in shock. Who would throw a beautiful dog like that in a trash can?”
Without hesitation, Brisk and Sparrow gently pulled the dog from the pile of trash. He was weak, scared, and clearly injured — but alive. The pair contacted local dog rescuer Laurie Schildt the next morning, and she agreed to take the dog in and fight for his recovery.
“I was heartbroken and angry,” Schildt told The Dodo. “I knew I had to help him.”

Veterinarians at Canada West Veterinary Specialists soon confirmed the extent of the dog’s suffering: broken ribs, a fractured leg, and a dislocated hip. Despite everything, the sweet pup never lost his gentle spirit.
Schildt named him Oscar — a nod to Oscar the Grouch — and promised he would never be thrown away again.
“He’s adjusted beautifully into my home,” Schildt said. “He’s loving, resilient, and amazes me every day.”
Oscar’s story spread quickly, sparking an outpouring of support from the community and social media. Thousands of dollars were donated for his ongoing care, and Canada West even offered to cover part of his medical expenses.

But perhaps the happiest twist of all? Oscar won’t have to go anywhere else.
“I’ve decided to adopt him,” Schildt said. “He’ll never feel pain or fear again. I’m completely in love with this little guy.”
From discarded and broken to cherished and safe, Oscar now has a forever family and a future filled with love.
