In Hemet, California, a police officer is turning to the public to help protect his most loyal partner — a 3-year-old Belgian Malinois named Barry.

Officer Vera, recently promoted to K-9 handler with the Hemet Police Department in Riverside County, wants to make sure Barry has every safeguard possible while serving the community. But there’s one vital piece of gear the department doesn’t provide: a bulletproof vest.
Barry’s custom-fitted vest will cost $4,000 — a price tag beyond the department’s budget. To bridge the gap, family friend Brandon Martinez launched a verified GoFundMe campaign and pledged to match every donation dollar-for-dollar.
“Every dollar counts — your support could literally help save a life,” Martinez wrote.

Barry is more than just a working dog. Trained at Adlerhorst International — a respected K-9 training facility with over 40 years of experience — he completed 240 hours of rigorous preparation in apprehension, article searches, and other law enforcement skills. On duty, he’s alert and fearless. Off duty, he’s a “hugger” who can’t resist his favorite toy ball.
“Barry is loyal, brave, and ready to protect our community — but right now, he needs our protection,” Martinez said.
As of Tuesday evening, the campaign had raised about $600 toward its $4,000 goal. The hope is that with the community’s help, Barry will soon have the same level of protection his human partner wears every day.
Those wishing to contribute can visit the campaign page and help give Barry the life-saving gear he deserves.
