Heartbreaking Photos Show Shelter Pup Then And Now — 10 Years Later, He’s Still Waiting

At the Kathleen C. Cailloux Humane Society of Kerrville (KCHS), staff members celebrate every adoption like it’s the biggest victory. But there’s one resident they’ve been hoping — for nearly a decade — to see finally go home: a sweet senior dog named Montgomery, or Monty.

Monty first arrived at the shelter back in 2014 as a tiny puppy, surrendered alongside his brother, Phoenix. The two made the best of shelter life, splashing in kiddie pools, chasing each other through the grass, and rolling happily in the dirt.

“[Their] favorite game to play is splashing around in the pool and then [chasing] each other into the grassy area and [rolling] around in the dirt, then [jumping] back into the pool,” KCHS wrote on Facebook.

Phoenix eventually found a forever family, and Monty thought he had, too. At just two years old, he was adopted. Sadly, that chapter ended too soon. By age four, Monty was returned to the shelter — and he’s been there ever since.

When he came back, Monty was no longer the bouncy puppy people remembered. He was timid, unsure, and missing his brother. Still, staff at KCHS knew he had so much love left to give.

“[He is] a little shy at first as you can tell from [his] picture,” KCHS wrote on Facebook. “If you let [him] get to know you, [he] will be your best friend and loyal. Come visit [him] and please have some patience, [he is] a really good boy.”

Nearly seven years have passed, and Monty’s still in the shelter waiting for his perfect family. The shelter’s staff, who’ve all fallen in love with Monty, can’t understand why nobody would want such a sweet boy.

“He has a very laid-back personality; always has,” said KCHS director Makenzie. “He hasn’t changed much since he’s been with us.”

The biggest change has been in his appearance: his once-jet-black coat now dusted with grey, a reflection of just how long he’s waited.

Because Monty developed anxiety around other animals during his years at the shelter, he’s best suited for a calm home with no pets or small children.

But with people he trusts, Monty shines. He adores walks, loves dressing up in sweaters, tutus, or even pajamas, and still has bursts of playful, puppy-like joy.

“Although he doesn't get along with other animals or children, he is the sweetest soul you would ever meet,” Makenzie said. “He has major puppy-dog eyes for anybody who looks at him.”

Now 11 years old, Monty is in good health and still has plenty of life ahead of him — all he’s missing is a family to share it with.

“Monty is a very sweet boy who just wants a nice couch and a warm heart to love him for his last few years,” Makenzie said.

After nearly a decade of waiting, Monty deserves to spend his golden years in a home of his own.
