At the Pennsylvania SPCA (PSPCA), 12-year-old Chessie can often be found curled up on a soft blanket, gazing lovingly at the people who pass her kennel.
Her gentle, affectionate spirit makes it hard to imagine the terrible place she came from.

Earlier this year, PSPCA’s animal law enforcement team received a call about animals trapped in dire conditions. When they arrived, they found a nightmare: a home overflowing with trash, no food or clean water in sight, and desperate animals barely clinging to life. Among them was Chessie.

“At her age, we wondered what her life had been like,” PSPCA shared in a post. “How long had she been waiting for help? Thanks to a Good Samaritan speaking up, she finally got the chance she deserved.”
Once safe at the shelter, Chessie needed time to trust again. Slowly, with patience and kindness, her true self began to shine through.

“When Chessie arrived, it understandably took some time to build her trust,” PSPCA volunteer programs manager Lindsey King told The Dodo. “We are so lucky we did because this girl is goofy, playful and so sweet.”
Before long, Chessie had become a favorite among staff and volunteers, who adore her joyful personality and affectionate nature.

Now, this resilient senior is hoping for the one thing she’s been missing all along: a forever home.
“She's a senior lady, so she's looking for a home that will play with her but also relax and snuggle,” King said. “Her ideal home would be without other pets, and with people who can manage her big, playful size.”
After all she’s been through, rescuers are determined that Chessie’s golden years be filled with love, comfort, and peace.
