Hidden in the lush rainforests of Ecuador lives an animal that looks like it wandered straight out of a fantasy novel — though it’s no bigger than your thumbnail.
Meet the bunny harvestman. With eight spindly yellow legs and what appears to be the head of a tiny black dog, this rare arachnid manages to be both eerie and adorable at the same time.

The illusion is uncanny: rabbit-like “ears” jut from its head, glowing yellow spots resemble watchful eyes, and the whole effect leaves people questioning whether the creature is even real.
Spoiler: he is.
Though the bunny harvestman scuttles around like a spider, he actually isn’t one. He belongs to the same order of arachnids as daddy longlegs, making him more of a distant cousin than a true spider.
Scientists first documented the species nearly 60 years ago, but even today, no one fully understands why this little critter looks the way he does.

One theory, according to scientist and photographer Andreas Kay, is that his oversized “ears” and doglike face are a clever survival strategy — making him appear bigger and scarier to would-be predators.
Fortunately, despite his bizarre looks, the bunny harvestman is completely harmless. He’s not venomous, doesn’t bite, and poses no danger to humans.
Instead, he’s just another reminder of how strange and wonderful nature can be. After all, if a dog-faced arachnid exists, what other wild surprises might be waiting out there in the rainforest?
