Beaux Tox’s face is unforgettable. With his furrowed brow and close-set eyes, he looks forever thoughtful — but his wagging tail and joyful energy tell a different story.
Some people overlooked him because of his unusual features. But for Jamie Hulit, a single photo was all it took to see that his life was worth saving.
“A friend of mine posted about him on Facebook, saying he needed a foster or adopter,” Hulit told The Dodo. “That day, I reached out and said, ‘I’ll take him. He deserves a home.’”
Beaux’s unique appearance was set before he was born. Sharing a crowded womb with six siblings left him with a sunken skull and eye placement that never changed.
But an MRI confirmed what mattered most — his condition didn’t affect his health or intelligence.
Still, his early years were filled with neglect. Because breeders couldn’t sell him, Beaux was given away for free.
His new owner banished him outdoors when he didn’t get along with cats, leaving him isolated in a backyard for five long years. Rescue groups tried to help, but he was always sent back.
By the time Hulit met him, Beaux was little more than skin and bones. Covered in fleas and mites, weak and emaciated, he had no comfort or companionship.
But to Hulit, who spent part of her own childhood in foster care, his story struck a deeply personal chord.
“I didn’t want him passed around anymore,” she said. “I wanted him to finally know stability and love. That’s why I adopted him outright — he deserved to just be a dog.”
When Hulit brought Beaux to the Hoegemeyer Animal Clinic in Kerrville, Texas, his chances of survival were even worse than she had imagined. Vets discovered Beaux was fighting severe heartworm disease.
His chances of survival were 50-50. But Hulit refused to give up on him.
“I told the vet I didn’t care,” she said.
For weeks he fought for his life, often hooked up to oxygen, with his vet and Hulit by his side. Slowly, Beaux rallied. He gained weight, underwent treatment, and against the odds, pulled through.
“He’s lost some hearing and vision,” Hulit said, “but he’s finally healthy — and happy.”
“There are people who will pay high dollar for a dog’s papers, and I feel like I paid for his health certificate,” Hulit said. “But I am 100 percent OK with that, knowing that he is now a happy, free guy.”
Since arriving at Hulit’s home, Beaux has transformed completely. “He was an outside dog, but you’d never know because he does not want to go outside,” she said. “He’ll go out if you do, but if you stay in, he’ll stand right by the door and look through the window.”
Today, Beaux’s life is unrecognizable from his past. He lives indoors with Hulit and Riley, her senior golden retriever mix, who has become his constant companion.
Despite the age gap, the two dogs are inseparable — playing, cuddling, and reminding each other what it means to belong.
Beaux has also taken on the role of foster brother, helping care for rescue kittens and dogs alongside Hulit. Most recently, he welcomed a new sister, Scout, into the family.
The once-forgotten dog who spent years alone now fills his home with energy, joy, and love.
“He’s so full of life,” Hulit said. “He’s brought us more happiness than I ever imagined. To me, he’s perfect.”
