Two years ago, April Morgan and her fiancé, J.C., were touring a home they were considering buying when something in the backyard caught their attention: an old doghouse. And inside, a dog was staring back at them.
At first, Morgan couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Was the dog supposed to be there, or had she been abandoned?
“Honestly, I was just in shock,” Morgan told The Dodo. “I was like, ‘I have to do something.’”
The truth was even more heartbreaking. The house’s previous owners had deliberately left their dog behind. According to the real estate agreement, the dog was to remain on the property because they no longer wanted her.
The dog, a 10-year-old sweetheart, had been part of the family since she was a puppy. After a decade of companionship, she was tied up in the yard and left behind as if she didn’t matter.
Morgan was stunned by the cruelty, but instantly drawn to the dog’s gentle demeanor.
“When I first met her, I thought she was the sweetest dog ever,” Morgan said.
J.C. quickly unclipped the leash keeping her confined, and the dog — who would soon be named Molly — ran freely around the backyard. For the first time in a long time, she seemed to realize she was finally safe.
For Morgan and J.C., adopting Molly was an obvious choice. They welcomed her into their home and introduced her to their cats and other dogs.
Settling in came quickly. Molly began enjoying long play sessions, pampering baths, and endless cuddles with her new furry siblings.
“[S]he’s just spoiled rotten,” Morgan said.
Molly has especially bonded with J.C., perhaps because he was the one who first set her free.
“She follows him around everywhere,” Morgan said.
For Morgan, seeing Molly thrive in a warm, loving home is a daily joy. After everything she endured, she deserves nothing but happiness, comfort, and love for the rest of her life.
“It’s just very heartwarming to know that she’s in a safe place,” Morgan said.
