City Lake Park in Royse City, Texas, is usually a place of quiet reflection — glassy water, soft ripples, and the gentle chatter of ducks gliding by.
But one peaceful afternoon, that calm was shattered when a couple spotted something hanging from a tree over the lake.
At first glance, it looked like a lifeless duck, tangled in fishing line and swaying just above the water.

“At first, they thought the duck was deceased,” said a Royse City Animal Control & Shelter representative. “But after a few tense moments, the duck began to move.”

Realizing she was still alive — and fighting to survive — the couple quickly called for help.
Animal control officer Alejandra Gutierrez rushed to the scene, joined by officers from Royse City Police. When she arrived, her heart sank.

“When I saw the duck hanging above the water, I was so concerned,” Gutierrez said. “She looked exhausted, but she was still struggling — still trying to free herself from that fishing line and hook.”
The rescuers soon discovered the water was far too deep for them to safely reach the duck. Without hesitation, they called in reinforcements from the Royse City Fire Department.
Moments later, firefighters waded into the chilly lake, water rising to their shoulders as they carefully approached the trapped bird.
Working together, they cut the fishing line loose and gently lifted the duck into Gutierrez’s waiting arms. She quickly removed the hook from the bird’s beak and examined her for injuries.

Miraculously, despite her terrifying ordeal, the duck was in excellent health — just tired and ready to be free.
Once cleared, rescuers released her back into the lake. With a splash and a flutter of wings, she rejoined her flock, paddling away as though nothing had ever happened.
“The duck is now back with her friends,” Gutierrez said with a smile. “Her future looks bright — and we’re just glad we could help her get there.”
