For months, João Spake has been confined to bed, battling serious health issues that have left his body weak and his days quiet. His doctors have worked tirelessly to ease his pain — but recently, something far more powerful than medicine arrived to lift his spirit.
That something had four legs, a soft mane, and the gentlest soul imaginable.
His name was Paçoca.

Paçoca is a therapy horse who works with volunteers from Coletivo Inclusão, a Brazilian nonprofit dedicated to bringing comfort and connection to people with special needs. When Paçoca visited João’s home, no one could have predicted how deeply the moment would touch everyone in the room.
As soon as Paçoca entered, the horse seemed to understand exactly what João needed. He walked softly toward the bed, leaned down, and rested his head on João’s chest — breathing slowly, calmly, as if offering his strength.
“He was like that with my father the whole time,” João’s daughter, Audrie Spake, wrote. “It was beautiful.”

In the video Audrie shared, João’s eyes fill with tears as he strokes Paçoca’s neck, overwhelmed by the quiet, healing presence beside him. It was a moment beyond words — one that seemed to reach places medicine could not.
“It was an inexplicable moment,” Audrie later said.
Experts agree that these interactions are more than just heartwarming — they can truly help heal. According to the Mayo Clinic, animal-assisted therapy can reduce pain, anxiety, depression, and fatigue in people facing a wide range of health challenges. And even family members who witness these visits often report feeling comforted too.
For João, Paçoca’s gentle visit brought something priceless — a reminder that kindness, love, and connection are the most powerful forms of medicine of all.
