When Monty’s family noticed her acting strangely, they couldn’t figure out what was wrong — until they spotted something colorful hanging from her mouth. To their disbelief, it was the corner of a beach towel — and Monty had somehow swallowed the entire thing.

Panicked, her family rushed the python to the Small Animal Specialist Hospital (SASH) in Sydney, Australia. The veterinary team immediately got to work to save her life.

“She was definitely unwell and was swollen and distended,” said Bec Moss, marketing coordinator at SASH. “This was literally a life-saving procedure. If we had not been able to remove the towel, Monty would not have survived.”
X-rays quickly revealed the full extent of the problem — the towel filled nearly the entire length of Monty’s body. To remove it, the specialists inserted a flexible endoscope down her digestive tract, allowing them to locate and guide out the foreign object safely.

Carefully and patiently, the team began pulling … and pulling …

… until finally, the massive towel was free.

“It was quite a lengthy procedure,” Moss said. “Everyone was amazed by the size of the towel — and by how she managed to fit it inside her body.”

Fortunately, Monty recovered well after the ordeal, with no lasting damage. Her family is keeping a closer eye on her now — and making sure towels stay far out of reach.
