On a scorching 98-degree afternoon, a Stray Rescue of St. Louis staff member was out walking a rescue dog when something unusual caught their eye…

…a crate sitting on the blistering sidewalk, completely covered by a black tarp.
Instantly, their heart leapt.

“They radioed on their walkie talkie,” a Stray Rescue representative told The Dodo. “They were a little panicked because it was so hot outside.”
Another team member, Rosie, rushed over to check.
The moment she lifted the tarp, her breath caught — inside were two adult dogs, panting heavily and desperately grateful to be discovered.
“They needed to get inside immediately,” the representative said.

The rescuers hurried the pair to the shelter clinic, where they were given water, vaccinations and a chance to cool down. With kennel space running low, the team quickly snapped photos and posted them to the shelter’s foster page, hoping someone could offer the abandoned siblings a soft place to land.
They named the pups Punky Brewster and Arnold Jackson — both around 3 years old and likely brother and sister. Arnold soon found a foster home, while Punky stayed at the shelter, patiently waiting for her turn.

Before long, both dogs met families who instantly fell in love with them. Today, Punky and Arnold are settled into their forever homes, soaking up affection and enjoying the stable, happy lives they deserve.
“These dogs are going to have wonderful futures,” the representative said. “They are both so sweet.”
