Meet Murphy — the happiest, friendliest pup who believes every person and animal is a brand-new best friend. But recently, his mom, Jo-Hannah Jamieson, discovered that Murphy has been enjoying a very special friendship … one he didn’t bother telling her about.

A couple of months ago, Jo-Hannah let Murphy into the backyard like she always does, assuming he needed a bathroom break. But instead of sniffing around the grass, Murphy trotted straight to the back fence — with purpose.
And then Jo-Hannah saw it.
From a small gap in the fence, a mysterious hand appeared … and began showering Murphy with scratches and pets. Murphy didn’t hesitate for a second — he leaned right in, clearly reveling in his secret daily affection.
Here’s the adorable moment on video:
The hand belongs to Jo-Hannah’s neighbor, a clearly devoted dog lover. No one knows exactly when these behind-the-fence meetups started, but one thing is certain:
This is a full-blown routine.
“Every time I let Murphy out, he goes to the back fence to see if my neighbor is there,” Jo-Hannah told The Dodo. “I think Murphy gets at least one pet a day from him.”
Murphy gets tons of love at home, but the neighbor’s magical hand is apparently irresistible. And Jo-Hannah doesn’t mind one bit.

“With lockdown and working from home, I’m the only person he sees all day,” she said. “So I think he likes getting pets from someone else for a change. I’m happy he gets a bit of socialization — he definitely loves company.”
Now that life is getting back to normal, Jo-Hannah says it might be time for Murphy to officially meet “the man behind the hand.” But until that day comes, Murphy and his mystery friend aren’t about to let a fence stand in the way of their adorable backyard bond.
