A group of rhinos is called a “crash” — a name that usually brings to mind power, speed and thunderous footsteps. But even the toughest animals have soft hearts, and one wildlife photographer recently got to witness that firsthand.
While exploring the South African wilderness, photographer Ruván Grobler captured a moment he’ll never forget. A newborn buffalo calf had just been born and was curled up in the grass beside his mother when a group of rhinos began walking toward them.
At first, no one knew what to expect.
“We were all holding our breaths,” Grobler wrote.
But instead of aggression or chaos, something incredible unfolded.
The rhinos approached slowly and gently, their curiosity guiding them. They carefully sniffed the area where the mother had given birth and then leaned in to examine the tiny calf — all without causing him any harm.
“The crash of rhinos smelled where the cow gave birth, then sniffed the buffalo calf,” Grobler wrote. “From there, the crash moved away, allowing the mother to comfort the calf.”
It was as if these powerful animals instinctively understood how delicate and important the newborn was — even if he wasn’t one of them.
For Grobler, witnessing such tenderness from a species known for its strength was unforgettable.
“Such a special sighting!” he wrote.
