Last week in Detroit, Michigan, animal rescuer Jordan Covington was standing outside a family’s home, chatting about the importance of spaying their dog, when an unexpected visitor appeared on the sidewalk.
Out of nowhere, a limping stray approached her.
Covington, founder of The KG Foundation, immediately noticed the dog was badly hurt. The nearby family explained that the pup had been abandoned by his owners and struck by a car the week before — left to suffer alone.

Despite the pain he was clearly in, the dog showed no fear. Instead, the moment Covington sat down, he made eye contact, pressed himself against her and curled up in her arms. His tail wagged nonstop.
“[He’s] been through hell and back, and he’s still ready to jump in the car with complete strangers and go for a ride,” Covington told The Dodo.
Covington and her team carefully helped the injured pup into their vehicle and rushed him to the vet. Once sedated, doctors were able to fully assess his condition. Along with injuries from the recent accident, they discovered older wounds — signs of a hard life long before Covington met him.
“You could tell it was just incredibly painful for him,” she said.
Now named Muffin Man, the resilient dog has spent the past week receiving intensive care. He’s on pain medication, antibiotics and heartworm treatment, and he’s also undergoing cold laser therapy to help heal his injured leg.

As his body recovers, his personality has completely stolen the hearts of everyone around him.
“He cannot get close enough to you,” Covington said. “If he could crawl into your skin, he probably would. He leans into you, rolls over, does anything he can to get closer.”

Once Muffin Man is strong enough, he’ll move into a foster home and eventually be available for adoption. Covington believes whoever adopts him will be incredibly lucky.
“This dog has been through the absolute worst and has every reason to be bitter,” she said. “But he’s the exact opposite.”
After being abandoned, injured and left behind, Muffin Man is finally safe. And all Covington hopes now is that the rest of his life is filled with the love and comfort he so clearly deserves.
If you’d like to help cover Muffin Man’s medical care, donations can be made to The KG Foundation.
