About three years ago, a homeowner in Orangeburg heard something alarming coming from outside.
It sounded like screaming.
The desperate cries were coming from an open septic tank near the property. Alarmed, the homeowner rushed over to investigate — and what they found was heartbreaking.
Inside the filthy water, barely keeping his head above the surface, was a terrified dog.
The exhausted pup was neck-deep in the tank, struggling to stay afloat.
Realizing the dog wouldn’t survive much longer on his own, the homeowner immediately called animal control. Officers arrived quickly, carefully pulled the dog out of the dangerous hole and rushed him to the local shelter for care.
Later that day, staff at the Orangeburg County Animal Shelter shared the dog’s story online, hoping someone could help him recover after his terrifying ordeal.
That’s when rescuers from Labor of Love Transport Rescue saw the post.
They knew they had to step in.
The rescue quickly arranged for the dog to be transferred into their care, and before long he was placed in a safe and loving foster home.
Rescuers decided to name the survivor Andy Dufresne — after the determined character from The Shawshank Redemption who refuses to give up hope even in the darkest circumstances.
The name felt fitting.
First, though, Andy needed a lot of care.
His rescuers gave him multiple baths, trying to remove the powerful smell of septic water from his fur. Once he was clean and comfortable, his foster mom, Andrea Roubal, could tell just how exhausted the poor dog truly was.
“He knew he was safe the moment he walked into our home,” Roubal said.
The relief was immediate.
“You could see a weight lift off of him,” she explained. “He ate, then immediately curled up and went to sleep. And honestly, he slept for days — only waking up for meals and potty breaks.”
Slowly but surely, Andy began to recover.
As his strength returned, so did his personality.
“Eventually the real Andy came through,” Roubal said. “The sweet, happy, goofy entertainer hiding behind that exhausted and frightened boy.”
With time, patience and love, Andy blossomed into a joyful, affectionate dog.
Before long, he was ready for the next chapter of his life — finding a forever home.
When one family came across Andy’s photo on the rescue’s website, the connection was instant.
“It was love at first sight,” Andy’s mom said.
The family adopted him, welcoming the once-struggling survivor into a life filled with love and security.
A few months later, they adopted another dog named Ellis — and the two quickly became inseparable best friends.
“With Ellis by his side and continued training, Andy’s confidence has completely blossomed,” his mom said.
Today, Andy has even taken on a special role in the community.
He regularly visits a local nursing home, where residents eagerly wait for his gentle company.
“He sits patiently, takes treats gently and happily accepts pets from everyone,” his mom said. “The joy he brings the residents is indescribable.”
Three years after the day he was pulled from that septic tank, Andy’s story still amazes the people who helped save him.
His foster mom says his determination is something she’ll never forget.
“Andy could have simply given up,” Roubal said. “But instead, he fought to survive. His persistence is something all of us can learn from.” 🐾
