When Krissy Raine, an animal rescue officer with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), responded to a call about a neglected dog, she had no idea just how heartbreaking the situation would be.
When she arrived at the property and saw the dog — later named Lola — her heart sank.
Lola was in terrible condition. Much of her fur was missing, her bones were clearly visible and her skin was covered in painful sores. Whatever had happened to her had left her extremely weak and uncomfortable.
Raine could barely recognize her as a dog.
“She just didn’t look like a dog at all,” Raine said in a press release. “It was like nothing I had ever seen.”
Thick scabs covered Lola’s face and head, making it impossible to tell what breed she was.
“It almost looked like she had dipped her head in concrete,” Raine said.
Raine quickly arranged for Lola to be signed over into the RSPCA’s care and rushed her straight to the veterinarian to begin treatment.
As she drove the fragile dog in the back of her rescue van, Raine worried she might already be too late.
But she refused to give up.
Veterinarians confirmed Lola was suffering from one of the worst skin conditions they had ever encountered. To examine her without causing further pain, they gently sedated her and began carefully treating the damaged skin.
Lola was bathed to remove layers of dry skin and scabs, then treated with medication to begin healing the severe infection.
Over the next week, the veterinary team repeated the process again and again, slowly helping her body recover.
A few weeks later, Raine returned to check on the dog she had rescued — and could hardly believe her eyes.
Staff members brought out a beautiful Akita.
At first, Raine assumed they had the wrong dog.
“I said, ‘That’s lovely — but can I see my dog now?’” Raine recalled.
Then the truth hit her.
It was Lola.
With proper care and treatment, the sickly dog Raine had rescued had transformed into a completely different animal.
“I had no idea it was her,” Raine said. “She looked totally different. I was in tears.”
When Lola was first rescued, Raine had feared the worst. The odds of recovery seemed incredibly small.
But Lola proved everyone wrong.
“She used to have this blank stare and fear in her eyes,” Raine said. “Now she looked happy. Her personality started shining through.”
Day by day, Lola grew stronger — and even a little bit mischievous.
“More and more personality came out,” Raine said. “And a bit of attitude too — which made me so happy. I really didn’t think we would be able to save her.”
Lola remained in RSPCA care for six months, continuing to heal and regain her strength. Eventually, she was healthy enough to begin the search for a forever home.
Before long, the perfect family found her.
When Lola first arrived at her new home, she was cautious. After everything she’d endured, trusting people didn’t come easily.
But with patience and kindness, things slowly changed.
“One day I just saw the penny drop for her,” said her new mom, Alison Ranger.
Lola began to relax and enjoy the life she’d never known before.
“She realized it was nice to have affection, treats and long walks,” Ranger said. “Now she’s settled, well-behaved and gives so much love.”
Today, Lola is thriving in her new home — a living reminder of how powerful compassion and second chances can be.
Because when rescuers first found her, few believed she would survive.
Now, she’s living the happy life she always deserved. 🐾
