Normally Grumpy Corgi Melts Hearts After Comforting His Sick Little Brother

Angus, a 9-year-old corgi with a famously grumpy personality, has never been the affectionate type. He prefers his personal space, avoids cuddles, and usually keeps his distance from other dogs — even from his younger brother, Jono.

But after Jono returned home from a difficult veterinary procedure, Angus did something his family had never seen before.

He walked over to his little brother and gently wrapped himself around him in a quiet hug.

“I instantly started crying,” their owner, Marian Phan, shared with The Dodo.

Marian and her husband, Davis, were stunned by the unexpected moment. In all the years they’d had Angus, the older corgi had never voluntarily shown that kind of affection toward Jono.

“It really felt like Angus understood Jono wasn’t feeling well,” Phan said.

The two corgis normally have a classic older-brother, younger-brother relationship.

Jono constantly wants Angus’s attention and loves being close to him, while Angus usually tolerates the affection with mild annoyance. Sometimes Jono squeezes himself into Angus’s bed just to cuddle beside him. Angus may grumble about it at first, but eventually he scoots over and lets his brother stay.

Despite their bond, the dogs could not be more different in personality.

Jono is social, gentle, and incredibly loving. He enjoys naps, snacks, and making friends with every dog he meets.

“He’ll walk up to other dogs and give them kisses if they’re comfortable with it,” Phan explained. “He’s just the sweetest dog, no matter what he’s been through.”

Angus, meanwhile, is more reserved and independent. He loves running, swimming, and staying active, but he isn’t usually interested in showing affection.

“I honestly don’t think they could be more opposite,” Phan said.

Over the years, Jono has faced serious medical challenges. He suffers from a condition called chylous effusion, which causes lymphatic fluid to leak into his chest cavity and makes breathing difficult. He has undergone multiple procedures to drain the fluid and manage the condition.

Thankfully, after his latest veterinary visit, the family finally received encouraging news. A medication appears to be helping reduce the fluid buildup, and Jono has started feeling much better.

“He’s doing better now,” Phan said.

Through every health scare and recovery, one thing has remained constant: Angus has quietly stayed by his brother’s side.

For Marian, seeing Angus comfort Jono after the vet visit was a powerful reminder that even the grumpiest pets can show love in the most meaningful ways.

“The fact that Angus knew Jono needed comfort in that moment was just so heartwarming,” she said. “No matter how different they are, there’s real sibling love between them.”
