What began as a peaceful hike through the New Zealand wilderness turned into an incredible story of survival, hope, and loyalty.
Jessica Johnston was exploring a remote hiking trail with her dog, Molly, when she lost her footing and plunged nearly 180 feet down a waterfall.
Rescuers rushed to the scene and managed to save Johnston, who suffered serious injuries in the fall.
But there was one heartbreaking problem.
Molly had disappeared.
The rugged terrain made searching for the dog incredibly difficult, and as the days passed, hope of finding her alive began to fade.

Then Lillian Newton, of Precision Helicopters, heard about the missing dog.
“No one asked me to look for her,” Newton said. “I just decided to help.”
With Johnston's blessing, Newton launched a fundraising effort to finance a helicopter search.
The response was overwhelming.
Within just eight hours, supporters donated far more than the amount needed, showing just how many people had become invested in bringing Molly home.

Armed with a team of volunteers—including someone using a thermal camera—Newton flew to the area where Molly had last been seen.
They decided to begin their search at the waterfall.
It turned out to be exactly the right place.
A week after disappearing, Molly was still there.
The loyal dog was sitting quietly on rocks beneath the waterfall where her owner had fallen, as if she had never given up hope that Jessica would return.
Even more astonishing, Molly appeared to be in remarkably good condition.
“The dog's condition was perfect,” Newton said.

Using treats to gain her trust, the rescue team gently coaxed Molly over before lifting her safely into the helicopter.
When Jessica learned that her best friend had been found alive, it became one of the brightest moments in an otherwise painful recovery.
Although she still had injuries to heal, knowing Molly was safe brought enormous comfort.
The volunteers who searched for Molly had never met either Jessica or her dog before that week.
They simply saw an animal in need and chose to help.
Because of their compassion—and Molly's incredible determination—the pair was finally reunited.
“It’s been a rough week,” Jessica later wrote. “But with both of us back home, I can add this adventure to the list.”
