When a young beagle named Winnie arrived at the Kentucky Humane Society, staff knew she was expecting puppies.
What they didn't expect was what her X-rays would reveal.
At just 1 year old and weighing only 23 pounds, Winnie was noticeably underweight. Despite her small frame, veterinary staff quickly discovered she was carrying three unusually large puppies.
The images immediately raised concerns.
Rescuers suspected the puppies' father may have been a much larger breed, making it unlikely that Winnie would be able to deliver them safely on her own.
“The size of her puppies was the most surprising factor,” said Jen Harris of the Kentucky Humane Society. “We knew she would probably need assistance when it came time to give birth.”
Preparing for every possibility, Winnie's veterinarian, Dr. Bewley, welcomed the expectant mom into her own home to foster her through the final days of pregnancy.
She created a quiet, comfortable space where Winnie could relax while remaining under close observation.
When labor finally began, Dr. Bewley stayed by Winnie's side for hours.
As the delivery progressed, it became clear that the little beagle was struggling.
To protect both Winnie and her unborn puppies, Dr. Bewley made the decision to perform an emergency cesarean section.
She quickly assembled her veterinary team, and within minutes, the surgery was underway.
Just twenty minutes later, three healthy puppies entered the world.
The adorable trio received fitting names inspired by beloved storybook characters: Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet.
Today, Winnie and her puppies are continuing to recover together in Dr. Bewley's foster home, where the tiny family is enjoying plenty of rest, nursing, and bonding time.
As Winnie settles into motherhood, her affectionate personality has begun to shine.
“She is starting to show just how cuddly and sweet she is,” Harris shared.
For the rescue team, Winnie's story is also a reminder of how important foster homes can be for vulnerable animals.
Opening a home to a pregnant dog or nursing mother can give both mom and her babies the quiet environment they need to thrive while freeing up valuable shelter space for other animals in need.
Thanks to quick veterinary care, a loving foster home, and a team that refused to take any chances, Winnie's difficult pregnancy ended with the happiest possible outcome.
Now, the little beagle who arrived frightened and underweight is doing what she does best—raising three healthy puppies surrounded by safety and love.
