
There is no bond quite as strong as a mother’s instincts to protect her babies. For one cat being heralded as a hero in Brooklyn, New York, her feline mom instincts were in overdrive the night she saved her litter of kittens.

A mama cat was taking care of her kittens in a garage when flames broke out and started to engulf the building. When Brooklyn firefighters arrive on the scene to battle the blaze, they could not believe their eyes.
One by one, a mama cat was carrying her small kittens out of the fiery inferno. With each trip back into the burning building, she would get more and more injuries and suffer horrible pain. Nothing stopped her from battling her pain and rescuing her kittens.

One of the firefighters, David Gianelli, took the cat and her kittens to a vet clinic. One of the kittens died, but four survived along with the mama cat.
The story captured worldwide attention and folks everywhere wanted to adopt them. The kittens were allowed to be adopted out two at a time to keep the family somewhat together. A woman named Karen Wellen adopted the mama cat, named Scarlett.

Sweet Scarlett lived a long, happy life until she passed in October of 2008. The clinic who saved the cat and her kittens won awards, and there were also books written about the ordeal. Scarlett’s legacy lives long beyond her years on earth. What an amazing tribute of a mother’s devotion to her kittens!
