In a peaceful corner of Michigan, around 50 happy hens spend their days roaming Jessica Hank’s backyard — pecking, dust-bathing, and living their best farm life. But as it turns out, these feathered ladies aren’t just gentle foragers — they’re fearless protectors, too.
A few weeks ago, Hank pulled into her driveway to find chaos in her usually calm yard. Her chickens were squawking and flapping up a storm. When she looked closer, she realized why — a black bear had wandered in from the nearby woods.
The massive visitor might have expected an easy stroll through the property, but the hens had other plans. Instead of scattering in fear, the determined birds teamed up to defend their home.
“I was just in such awe of the entire scenario,” Hank told The Dodo. “I was really just shocked that they ran the bear off!”
She caught the whole thing on video — a feisty flock of hens standing their ground while the startled bear backed away and fled into the trees.

Even more impressively, it was the hens who took charge. “It was a 100 percent female-led effort,” Hank said with a laugh. “The roosters just sat back and watched.”
Once the bear disappeared into the forest, Hank rewarded her brave birds with plenty of well-deserved treats.
“They got extra snacks that night,” she said. “They’re already pretty spoiled — but they definitely earned it.”
Luckily, the bear didn’t cause any damage, and he hasn’t dared to return since. Thanks to their quick teamwork, the hens made sure their backyard stayed a bear-free zone.
“My chickens are pretty brave and hilarious,” Hank said. “They definitely keep life entertaining.”
