Day Care Says He’s Too Big For The Small Dogs — But He Still Won’t Leave His Tiny Best Friend

When Greta and Archie met at Sprockett’s Doggy Day Camp last August, their bond was instant. From their very first day together, the two pups gravitated toward each other and quickly became inseparable.

“Whenever they were both here on the same day, they’d play nonstop,” Theresa Mistelbacher, owner of Sprockett’s Doggy Day Camp, told The Dodo. “And usually Greta would end up taking a nap right on top of Archie.”

At the time, Archie was still a puppy and small enough to stay in the same play area as Greta. But as the weeks passed, Archie did what puppies do best — he grew. By mid-November, he officially outgrew the “Small Dogs” section.

“Archie was moved to the Big Dog pen,” Mistelbacher said.

While both dogs adjusted and made new friends, their connection to each other never faded. Every time they spotted one another through the fence separating their play areas, they lit up with excitement and searched for a way to stay close.

“They’d get so excited when they saw each other that we started letting them hang out side by side along the fence,” Mistelbacher said. “There are regulations here in Winnipeg, Manitoba, about which dog sizes can be in the same pens, so we can’t let them play together like before.”

Now, Archie and Greta roll around on opposite sides of the fence, poking their noses through the gaps and reaching out with their paws. They may not be able to wrestle and chase each other anymore, but they’ve found their own way to stay connected.

Their daycare family is hopeful that, with permission from their owners, the pair might occasionally be reunited for supervised visits. Until then, Archie and Greta remain devoted to each other — proving that even a fence and a size difference can’t come between true best friends.
