When Lucie Holmes, founder of Lucie’s Animal Rescue, received a routine call about a dog surrender, she never imagined how urgent the situation would become.
The dog’s owner explained that he needed to give the pup up — because the dog barked at other dogs and people while out on walks.
“I asked what kind of training he’d had to help with that,” Holmes told The Dodo. “He said, ‘None.’”

Although the rescue was already full, Holmes explained that she’d reach out once space became available. She hoped the owner might reconsider or work with the dog in the meantime. But just a couple of hours later, she got a call that stopped her cold.
“A local vet rang me to say the dog had been brought in to be put to sleep,” she said. “I was shocked. Thankfully, the vet refused.”

Realizing the dog’s life was on the line, Holmes stepped in immediately. She rearranged things at the shelter to make room — and saved the dog, named Marcus, just in time.
When Marcus arrived, he was scared and unsure of what was happening. But within the hour, his true personality began to shine.

“He was nervous at first, but soon he was playing with the other dogs and my children,” Holmes said. “And five days in — still no barking!”
All Marcus needed was a bit of patience, kindness, and the chance to feel safe. Now, he’s thriving.

“He’s currently under assessment,” Holmes added, “but we’ve already received a lot of applications. Hopefully, we’ll find him the perfect forever home soon.”
Marcus’s story is a powerful reminder that no dog should lose their life for simply needing guidance and time to adjust.
