As a driver sped down a quiet Kentucky road, a small shape by the shoulder caught their eye. Slowing down for a closer look, they realized it wasn’t just debris — it was a tiny brown-and-white puppy, tied to a broken tree, sitting silently and waiting to be seen.
The driver immediately called for help, and a local rescue team raced to the spot.
“She was just so stoic sitting there by the tree, waiting for someone to notice her,” said Kim Desroches of Friends of Lewis County Animals. “We’re so thankful the shelter found her and took her in. She was found not far from the shelter, actually.”

The puppy, later named Ladybird, was only about six or seven weeks old — small, fragile, and far too young to be left alone. The shelter offered her immediate safety, but it wasn’t the best place for such a young pup. When Desroches saw Ladybird’s photo, she knew she had to help.

“As soon as I saw her post, I started asking if any of my volunteers could foster her,” Desroches said. “A shelter isn’t ideal for a puppy — they’re vulnerable to illnesses and stress. Luckily, one of our volunteers stepped up right away.”

Once she was safe in a foster home, Ladybird’s personality began to shine.
“She was a little scared and unsure when she was first picked up,” Desroches said. “But once she settled in, she was such a happy, playful puppy.”

No one knows how Ladybird ended up tied to that tree, but what matters most is that she’s no longer alone. After a short stay in foster care, she was transferred to the Licking County Humane Society, where she continues to thrive and charm everyone she meets.
Now, Ladybird is getting closer each day to the happy ending she deserves — a forever home filled with love.
