The RSPCA’s “Clear The Shelters” campaign was a joyful weekend for more than 700 animals across New South Wales, as families showed up in droves to give them loving homes. But when the final day ended and the kennels stood quiet, one dog remained behind — waiting.
Deisel, a 5-year-old Staffordshire terrier, was the last dog left at the Hunter RSPCA shelter in Rutherford. While his 149 fellow shelter pets went home with new families, Deisel didn’t find his match.

“He did meet a few families, but the connections just didn’t click,” explained Dr. Debbie Jaggers, senior manager at Hunter Animal Care Services.
It’s not the first time Deisel has been overlooked. Two months earlier, he was surrendered by his previous family, who struggled to manage his high energy. Living in a rural area, Deisel had a bit too much interest in the resident horses — and his people decided he wasn’t a good fit.

Now, the shelter hopes Deisel can find a new life in a suburban setting — ideally one with a fenced backyard, no small animals or cats, and a family who can appreciate his zest for life.
“Deisel does really well with calm dogs and confident older children,” Jaggers noted.
He’s already mastered leash walking and basic commands like “sit,” and he’s never short on affection. In fact, Deisel is known for handing out enthusiastic kisses to anyone who gets close enough.
What he wants more than anything is to be part of a family that includes him — whether it’s for daily walks, backyard play, or simply cuddling up inside with the people he loves.
“Deisel is a happy-go-lucky guy with a big smile and a personality to match,” his adoption profile reads.
Though he’s still waiting, Deisel’s spirits remain high. Staff at the shelter are certain his perfect match is out there — and that it’s only a matter of time before he finds the forever home he’s been dreaming of.
