While cruising through Hawaii’s Kaneohe Bay, June Mellor and her family were soaking in the sunshine when something dark floating in the water caught their eye.
“At first, we thought it was a log,” Mellor told The Dodo. “But then it moved.”

Curious, they steered closer. From a distance, the shape almost looked like a dog — until they spotted a small, rounded snout breaking the surface. That’s when they realized the truth: a pig was treading water, and she looked utterly exhausted.
“We were stunned,” Mellor said. “We wondered where she’d come from and how long she’d been out there. One thing was certain — she needed help.”

Acting fast, Mellor’s husband and son grabbed a rope and fashioned a lasso. After a few careful attempts, they looped it around the pig’s middle and gently pulled her aboard.
“The minute she was on deck, she just collapsed,” Mellor recalled.

They tucked her into a shady corner of the boat to rest. The family named her Miracle — a tribute to her unlikely survival. As the boat headed for shore, the little pig lay quietly, gathering her strength.
The moment Miracle’s hooves touched grass, everything changed.
“She instantly perked up,” Mellor said. “Suddenly, she was alert and sniffing all around.”

With her energy returning, Miracle wandered toward the trees, disappearing into the wild where she belonged. The Mellors watched her go, hearts full, knowing the mysterious “log” they’d spotted had turned into a rescue they’d never forget.
