Firefighters Use Specialized Tools To Rescue Tiny Puppy Stuck Between Massive Boulders

Last October, a 3-month-old Great Pyrenees puppy named Zoe found herself in a terrifying situation near her family’s home in Ramona, California. While exploring outdoors, the curious pup slipped and tumbled into a narrow gap between two enormous rocks — a space so tight she could barely move.

Panicked and trapped in the dark crevice, Zoe cried for help. When her family realized what had happened, they immediately called CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire.

A team of firefighters rushed to the scene, knowing the situation was urgent.

“Zoe was clearly scared and stuck,” fire captain Mike Cornette told The Dodo. “Our first priority was figuring out how to free her safely while keeping both the puppy and her family as calm as possible.”

Initial attempts to reach Zoe weren’t successful, so the firefighters called in reinforcements from San Diego County Fire’s Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) unit. The specialized team arrived with advanced equipment and quickly devised a new plan.

Using pneumatic airbags — heavy-duty inflatable tools designed to lift or shift massive objects — the rescuers carefully applied pressure between the boulders. Slowly but surely, the rocks began to separate.

Moments later, Zoe squeezed free and burst into the open.

“Once she was out, she ran straight to her family,” Cornette said. “It was an incredibly emotional and joyful moment for everyone.”

As Zoe happily reunited with her relieved owners, the firefighters stood back, soaking in the success of the rescue. The operation had been challenging, but the outcome made it all worthwhile.

“Our crews often respond on what are some of the hardest days people face,” Cornette said. “So when a call ends with a scared puppy safely back in her family’s arms, it brings a lot of smiles. This was one of those days we won’t forget.”
