Late one cold night in Mississippi, dog rescuer Lisa Reams was warm in bed when her phone lit up with a message that made her heart drop.
A concerned neighbor had spotted a stray dog shivering alone on a torn, abandoned couch beside a dumpster. The photo said everything.
“I knew how cold it was outside,” Reams told The Dodo. “I wasn’t going to rest until she was safe and warm.”
Still in her pajamas, Reams jumped out of bed and drove straight to the scene.
When she pulled up, she immediately spotted the dog curled tightly on the couch, trying to conserve what little warmth she had left. As soon as their eyes met, the pup lifted her head — and began wagging her tail.
“She was shaking so badly,” Reams said. “But she let me love on her and put a leash on. She walked right to my truck and hopped in.”
Once inside the warm vehicle, the transformation was instant. Wrapped in a thick blanket with the seat warmers on, the dog — later named Cammi — relaxed completely and slept the entire ride home.
Safe at last, Cammi quickly showed just how grateful she was.
Now about a year and a half old, she’s thriving in rescue care and soaking up every bit of affection she can get.
“She is adapting brilliantly to the good life,” Rachel Larkin, director of social media for NYC Second Chance Rescue, told The Dodo. “She loves sunbathing, running around outside and melting into any attention she’s given.”
Soon, Cammi will head to New York, where she’ll be available for adoption through NYC Second Chance Rescue. Her rescuers are hopeful she’ll find her forever family quickly — but even if she doesn’t, her future is secure.
“Paws crossed she’ll land in her forever home,” Larkin said. “And if not, she’ll go straight into a loving foster home to continue her journey.”
After surviving a freezing night on a discarded couch, Cammi now has something she never had before — safety, warmth and a real chance at the life she deserves.
