In a quiet Detroit neighborhood, residents were used to seeing a friendly German shepherd wandering around with her tail gently wagging.
The senior pup, later named Nikki, was often seen loyally walking beside her owner, always happy to greet anyone with a kind gaze and calm demeanor.
But one day, Nikki appeared alone — and this time, something was different. She was still walking the same streets, but her companion was no longer by her side.
“Sadly, her owner passed away,” said Gail Montgomery, cofounder and director of Almost Home Animal Rescue League. “After that, she started wandering around with just her stuffed toy.”
Heartbroken and confused, Nikki turned to the only comfort she had left — a large, plush stuffed animal. She carried it everywhere, refusing to let it out of her sight.

To those who saw her, it was clear this toy had become more than just a plaything. It was her lifeline.
“Most stray dogs wouldn’t hold onto a stuffed animal. They’re usually focused on survival — finding food, water, safety,” Montgomery explained. “But for Nikki, that toy was her security blanket.”
For weeks, Nikki roamed the neighborhood, clutching her cherished toy. Kindhearted neighbors left out food and water while trying to contact a rescue group that could help. Eventually, they reached South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, who stepped in to help.
Capturing Nikki wasn’t easy — she was scared and guarded — but after a few patient days, the team succeeded. Even then, Nikki wouldn’t part with her stuffie.

“She wouldn’t let go,” Montgomery said. “It was like her comfort, her binky.”
Once rescued, Nikki was brought to Almost Home Animal Rescue League, still cradling her beloved toy. Both she and her plush friend were worn down and in need of care.
As the vet team examined Nikki — who was found to be suffering from heartworm — staff at the shelter carefully restored her stuffed animal.
“It was filthy and torn up,” Montgomery said. “But we washed it, sewed it back together, and gave it right back to her.”
Exhausted but safe, Nikki curled up with her newly revived companion and finally rested.

Her story soon captured the hearts of many, and donations of stuffed animals began flooding into the rescue.
“People have been sending her all kinds of stuffies,” Montgomery said. “She has more than she could ever need — we must have a million by now!”
Despite helping thousands of dogs over the years, Montgomery says Nikki holds a special place in her heart.
“She’s truly one of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever met — and I’ve been doing this for 23 years,” she said. “There’s just something extraordinary about her.”

Now, Nikki is thriving in a loving foster home while she continues her medical treatment. Her new family adores her, and Montgomery still gets regular photo updates — each one showing Nikki surrounded by love and more toys than she could ever imagine.
“She’s got a whole collection now,” Montgomery said, smiling. “And honestly, for a dog like Nikki, there’s no such thing as too many stuffies.”
