Injured Dog Found on Highway — But Her Best Friend Refused to Leave Her Side

Earlier this week, a man named Connor Bailey made a heartbreaking discovery on a busy highway in St. Louis, Missouri. He spotted a black dog lying injured on the rumble strips — and beside her, a gray and white pit bull who wasn’t going anywhere without her.

“[She] has a gray and white pitty friend wearing a collar with no tags,” Bailey wrote in a post on a local lost-and-found pets Facebook group.

Within moments of seeing the post, rescuers from Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) jumped into action. When they arrived on the scene, the situation was just as Bailey had described — one dog clearly hurt, and the other standing guard with unwavering loyalty.

“Her friend … wouldn’t leave her side,” SRSL wrote.

The team gently scooped up the injured black dog, whom they named Hope, and led her steadfast friend, Diamond, to follow them to safety.

Though their work often involves strays, rescuers quickly noticed that these two dogs were different — they looked healthy and cared for, suggesting they had a home and people who loved them.

“We could tell the pups were in great shape (other than being hit by a car, of course),” SRSL shared. “We knew they were loved — we just had to find their people!”

At the vet clinic, Hope was examined and, to everyone’s relief, her injuries were minor. Her leg needed some stitching, but there were no broken bones.

“She’s going to be OK!” SRSL confirmed.

While both dogs were microchipped, the contact information on file was out of date. Still, the shelter team was determined not to give up.

Meanwhile, on the other end of town, the dogs’ frantic family had been searching high and low, following every lead — including the very Facebook post that had led to their rescue.

Once connected with SRSL, the worried pet parents rushed to the shelter. Their pups had traveled more than a mile from home, but that distance made their reunion even sweeter.

“They’ve been worried sick,” SRSL wrote. “It was a wonderful reunion.”

Diamond was able to go home right away, while Hope needed a little more time to recover from her procedure. That evening, her parents returned to bring her home — and just like that, their little family was whole again.

“We’re so happy to get them back together,” SRSL said.

The shelter helped the family update the dogs' microchips to ensure they’ll never be lost for long again.

And while the memory of the highway rescue still lingers, so does the warmth of a bond that never wavered — between two best friends and the family who loves them.
