Kitten Kicked Out of Her Library Home Is Now Searching for a Family

When Pepper, a tiny stray kitten, wandered into the Pioneer Memorial Library in Fredericksburg, Texas, the book-filled sanctuary quickly became her home. Library visitors adored seeing her curled up beside books or exploring the cozy stacks — it seemed like the perfect match. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to last.

Recently, the county ruled that the 5-month-old kitten could no longer stay at the library, leaving her many fans heartbroken. Supporters quickly organized petitions to advocate for Pepper, but in the meantime, the sweet kitten needed a safe place to land. She’s now living at the Hill Country SPCA, hoping one of her admirers will open their heart and give her a forever home.

“Pepper came to us on Friday, 4/18, after spending two months at the library,” Andrew Davis, executive director of Hill Country SPCA, told The Dodo. “I've seen posts saying she lived there for years — and honestly, when you meet her, it feels like you've known her forever. Her gentle spirit leaves a lasting impression. The legend of Pepper is only growing — and rightfully so!”

Everyone at Hill Country SPCA has fallen in love with Pepper’s bright and spunky personality.

“She’s only about 5 pounds, but her personality is larger than life,” Davis said. “She’s full of beautiful sass.”

Currently, Pepper spends her days lounging around the shelter’s office, making fast friends with the other office cats and charming every person who passes through.

Though Pepper clearly enjoyed her time living among the books and visitors at the library, she's proven just how resilient and adaptable she is. Now, she’s ready to bring her sass, sweetness, and sparkle into her next adventure — a forever home.

With so many people already captivated by her in just a few short months, it’s only a matter of time before the right person steps forward to adopt her.

“Pepper has captured all of our hearts here, just as she has throughout the community,” Davis said. “She has so much love to give, and we are determined to help her find the loving home she truly deserves.”
