When a young mountaineer set out to climb the snowy peaks of Croatia’s Mount Velebit, he had no idea how critical his four-legged companion would become.
But his loyal dog, North, was ready to prove just how deep a dog’s devotion can go.

Last Saturday, during the challenging 5,600-foot trek, the hiker suffered an injury and became stranded high on the icy mountain.
As darkness fell and temperatures plunged, he was left vulnerable in the harsh conditions, far from help.
But he wasn’t alone.
Right by his side was North, his Alaskan malamute — and guardian angel.
While a 27-person rescue team fought their way up the mountain in dangerous weather, battling ice and fallen branches, North took matters into his own paws. He curled up next to his injured human, using his body heat to keep him warm through the freezing night.
“Friendship and love between man and dog know no boundaries,” the Croatian Mountain Rescue Service (HGSS) shared on Facebook. “North passed without injuries, but his friend, a young mountaineer, was not so lucky. He lay beside him and kept him warm with his body.”
Rescuers finally reached the pair around midnight and were able to get the hiker medical care the next morning — thanks in no small part to North’s unwavering dedication.

Even once help arrived, North never left his human’s side.
“His loyalty didn’t end with the arrival of rescuers,” HGSS wrote. “He stood guard over his person for 13 hours. From this example, we can all learn what it means to truly care for one another.”

Now safe and home again, North is being hailed a hero — though he likely wouldn’t understand why. He was simply doing what dogs do best: being there when it matters most.
His dad is expected to make a full recovery, and North? He’s soaking up love, praise, and plenty of well-earned treats.
