When the team at One of A Kind Pet Rescue learned about Violet, a gentle mama dog abandoned for doing nothing more than giving birth, they knew they had to help.
Violet had just delivered a litter of 12 puppies — a number her previous family clearly didn’t want to deal with. Instead of offering her support, they discarded her and her babies without a second thought.
“It was heartbreaking,” said Tanya Jonda, the rescue’s executive director. “A woman in Columbus, who’s a friend of my daughter, saw a Facebook post about a dog and her puppies being dumped on someone’s property. She took them in and reached out to us.”
Despite the daunting size of the litter, Jonda and her team didn’t hesitate. They agreed to take in Violet and all 12 of her pups — no questions asked.
When Violet arrived, it was clear she’d been through a lot. She was painfully thin, blind in one eye, and crawling with fleas. But even in her frail state, she was fiercely devoted to her puppies.
“She was such a good mom,” Jonda said. “The puppies were surprisingly healthy, which really speaks to how well Violet cared for them despite her own condition.”
The team gave all the puppies names starting with the letter “V” and quickly fell in love with their sweet, snuggly nature. Whether from instinct or their shared experience, the puppies stayed closely bonded, often piling together for naps.
Now, they’re thriving.
Six of the pups have already been adopted, and the rest — including Violet — are preparing for their forever homes. Violet is scheduled for her final vetting and will soon be available for adoption herself.
“Violet is an incredibly sweet dog,” Jonda said. “She loves people and other dogs and has such a calm, loving personality. She’s been through so much, and she still has so much love to give.”
Though her story began in heartbreak, Violet’s future — and her puppies’ — looks bright.
