Late one quiet night eight years ago, staff at a Michigan nursing home found an unexpected visitor snoozing on the lobby couch.
It wasn’t a resident. It wasn’t a visitor.
It was a dog.

No one knew where the black pup had come from or how he’d gotten inside. The building’s automatic doors must’ve opened just long enough for him to stroll in, curl up on the soft cushions, and fall asleep like he belonged there.
When the team at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility called the sheriff, they soon discovered the wanderer’s identity — he had escaped from the animal shelter just across the street. The officers returned him safely, and everyone figured that was the end of it.
But it wasn’t.

A few nights later, the mysterious intruder was back — once again curled up on that same couch.
And then he came back again.
That’s when the staff began to realize something: maybe this dog wasn’t lost at all. Maybe he’d already found exactly where he was meant to be.
So one of the administrators made it official — they adopted him and named him Scout.

From that day forward, Scout became part of the Meadow Brook family.
“He quickly made this household his own,” the facility wrote on Facebook.
Scout roamed the halls freely, visiting residents in their rooms, joining staff at the nurse’s station, and soaking up affection everywhere he went. It didn’t take long for everyone to see that he was meant to be there.
And it turned out, Scout had a few tricks up his sleeve.

“We soon found out that Scout can open doors and climb fences,” the staff wrote. “Which would explain how he kept escaping the animal shelter.”
When he wasn’t making his rounds, Scout took his self-appointed job as “head of security” very seriously — always the first to respond when the doorbell rang or a new guest arrived.

Mostly, though, he was there for comfort — offering quiet companionship to residents who needed a friend.
“Scout truly brings joy to our residents, staff, and visitors,” the team shared. “This is his home. He chose us.”

And after eight happy years as the heart of the Meadow Brook community, everyone agrees — the mysterious couch-sleeping dog didn’t just find a home that night.
He found his purpose.
